While this terminology tended to fall into misuse as the church became mostly gentile, it did continue for some time. In the second century, Justin Martyr, in his dialogue with the Jew Trypho, declares that Jesus, “by rising on the first day of the week [mia tōn sabbatōn hēmera] circumcised us from error and evil” (Dial. 41.4).1 And, although as we shall see the Greek and Latin churches soon began using different terminology, this ancient usage continued in the Syriac-speaking church.
